University of California Santa Cruz researcher and director of the Marine Mammal Physiology Project, Dr. Terrie Williams, presented to Sitka sixth graders about how seal hearts work in cold climates. Blatchley students were given the opportunity to monitor their heart rates while holding their breath in cold water to see how the cold impacts their heart rates.
