SITKA WHALEFEST

Sitka WhaleFest is a celebration of our diverse and abundant marine mammals population. From mid-September until mid-January, the pristine waters of Sitka Sound are home to many humpback whales. Biologists believe the whales are building up food reserves prior to their migration to tropical waters.

Learn about the most recent studies on humpback whales and other Alaskan marine wildlife by attending symposium lectures. Open forum question and answer sessions follow all presentations.

Sitka’s weather in November is moderate, with temperatures in the 40s and lower 50s. It may be raining, but that won’t dampen the fun and spirits of everyone joining the celebration. You can enjoy planned whale and marine mammal viewing trips and other festive events.

The beautiful seaside community of Sitka offers a remarkable opportunity to entertain and challenge you with activities and new information on marine mammals. Bioblitz 2012!

Sitka will again be overtaken by a blitzkrieg, 24-hour effort to inventory all of the species and diversity of Sitka from the tops of the mountains to the subtidal August 18th-19th.  Here is the Sitka Bioblitz 2012 descriptions of the amazing events!  Join scientists and management agencies  such as the US Forest Service, Sitka Conservation Society, the National Park Service, University of Alaska-Southeast, and many many more.  There will be children’s events and biological surveys of birds, bats, mammals, invertebrates, fish, plants, fungus, lichens, and all the other living things.  Check back for schedule updates!

Encounters: Radio Experiences in the North
