Overview:
As part of our mission, SSSC offers science education through a number of different pathways:
K-12
We provide after school programs for elementary students (grades 3-5); B2: Be a Biologist (B2 Registration SSSC Afterschool). This fall we will offer our first ever underwater robotics program for middle school students (robotic Registration SSSC saturday), which will meet on Saturdays! The Sitka Sound Science Center began Eco Explorers a middle school lunch program last fall, which will continue on Thursdays this year. We also provide a monthly preschool program to Mt. Edgecumbe Preschool and Headstart. In addition, we have summer camp programs, and we support the joint Sitka High School/Mt. Edgecumbe High School Ocean Bowl Team. We have a Scientists in the Schools program (funded by USDA) called Taking AME (aquaculture and marine education) to encourage our coastal community students to study Marine Science and pursue related careers. For information about any of our school events and programs, contact the Science Center at 907.747.8878.
Higher Education
SSSC currently has a partnership with the University of Alaska Fisheries Technology Training Program.
SSSC welcomes undergraduate institutions from around the world to bring students to Sitka for one to four week courses. Courses can be developed around marine biology, culture and the environment, fisheries technology, aquaculture, environmental science, forest ecology, and forest botany. We are also developing a Semester in Alaska program for students to study environmental science and marine biology.
